Investigation determines driver misreported in serious ATV crash
BOY RIVER—Information provided to the Cass County Sheriff's Office as part of an all-terrain vehicle crash investigation was determined to be false.
In a Friday, May 31, news release, the sheriff's office reported the driver of the ATV was Kristine Johnson, 20, of Remer, rather than Benjamin Swankier, 21, of Remer. Swankier was originally named as the driver in a previous news release. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash near Boy River, which resulted in serious injuries for Swankier.
At 9:04 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, the sheriff's office learned from personnel in the Deer River Essentia Health emergency room they were treating two people involved in an ATV crash in Cass County on the Soo Line Trail near Boy River.
Deputies responded and learned Swankier was operating a 2011 Polaris RZR on the Soo Line trail when it left the trail striking trees. It was later determined Johnson was the driver. Both were transported by private vehicle to the emergency room. Swankier was later transported to a Duluth hospital via North Memorial Air Care for treatment of serious injuries.
The investigation continues with charges pending.
