DEERWOOD-A 62-year-old Deerwood man is dead following a head-on fiery crash between a semitrailer and a pickup truck Friday, June 14.
The crash was reported at 6:57 p.m. at the intersection of County Highway 12 and Hawks Road, southwest of Deerwood. The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office reported both vehicles caught fire following the collision and firefighters from the Deerwood Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames.
Officials shut down County Highway 12, also known as the Deerwood shortcut, shortly after the crash occurred. Busy weekend traffic was diverted around the wreck, with the stretch remaining closed at 9:30 p.m. Friday. The closure was expected to continue until nearly midnight.
The driver of the pickup truck, whose identity was not released pending notification of family, died at the scene. The driver of the semitrailer was treated by Cuyuna Regional Medical Center ambulance personnel and released. The big rig was pulling a trailer, but it did not appear to be loaded, according to an official.
The sheriff's office noted a reconstruction team from the Minnesota State Patrol was expected Friday night to determine how the crash occurred. A witness who reported the crash to 911 dispatchers but did not remain at the crash site was sought, the sheriff's office reported, to provide a statement on what occurred.
Also assisting at the scene were the Deerwood and Crosby police departments and the Crow Wing County Highway Department.
