BACKUS-A woman lost control of her all-terrain vehicle while attempting to negotiate a sharp turn, suffering suffered serious injuries after the ATV left the trail and rolled down an embankment.

The driver, Mary Hedstrom, 58, of Alexandria, was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. The crash was reported at 2:06 p.m. Sunday, June 16, in the Foothills State Forest, Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch stated in a news release. The crash occurred near the Spider Lake Recreation Area in Ansel Township, rural Backus.

Deputies and emergency medical service personnel responded to the scene. Hedstrom was operating a 2004 Sportsman 600 ATV. She was taken from the scene by ambulance. The crash is under investigation. Assisting at the scene were the Sebeka Fire Department, Pine River Fire Department, Pine River Police Department, North Memorial Ambulance and North Memorial Air Care.
