A Deerwood man who works the night shift and was sleeping Wednesday afternoon was woken by a neighbor after his house on Serpent Lake started on fire, Deerwood Fire Chief Mike Bodle said.
The fire, reported at 4:56 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, destroyed the home on the 21000 block of Peterson Creek Drive. The home is owned by Edwin and Janice Anderson.
"Thankfully the neighbor was there, he could have easily not made it out of the house," Bodle said.
Bodle said the neighbor saw smoke and flames and went to wake up the Deerwood man, the only person in the house. They safely escaped and called 911. When firefighters arrived on scene, the attached garage was fully engulfed and the fire went into the house, into the roof trusses.
"The upstairs is completely gone," Bodle said. "The fire started in the garage, but the cause is undetermined."
