Amateur radio's event of the year, the Annual Field Day 2016, will be held Saturday at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds.
The event is free and open to the public Saturday afternoon. Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club members and other participants will set-up usually starting on Friday and takedown is Sunday. It is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the U.S. and Canada. Each year nearly 40,000 amateurs gather with their clubs, friends or simply by themselves.
"It is a time where many aspects of amateur radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, most groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities," said Brainerd Area Amateur Radio Club's Vice President and Field Day Coordinator Lyle Amundson in a news release. "It is an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate Amateur Radio to local elected community leaders, key individuals with the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For us, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of the annual calendar."
For the operators, the objective is to make radio contact with as many stations as possible on most amateur bands and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. Field Day is open to all amateurs in the U.S. and Canada. Often many foreign stations participate.
