VERNDALE-The annual meeting of Old Wadena Society will be Sunday at the BullsEye Restaurant in Verndale. A special buffet dinner will be available at noon followed by the program and meeting at 1 p.m.
Program speaker will be Clarence Horsager, Verndale area farmer and historian who will be presenting "A Piece of History." Among other topics, he will discuss the history of the "Wheat Trail" that served the Verndale area in the 1800s.
Horsager, a University of Minnesota graduate, has been active for decades in researching and preserving the history of the area. He is a former president of the Verndale Historical Society, the Wadena County Wheat Trail ran through his farm and he continues to give museum and history tours of the area.
Election of Old Wadena Society board members will follow the program. Memberships in the Society will be available at the meeting.
The mission of the Old Wadena Society is to preserve and share knowledge of the natural and historical treasures of the Old Wadena area and to encourage the folk arts for the education and enjoyment of everyone.
The Old Wadena Society will conduct the annual Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folk Life Festival on Aug. 13-14 at Old Wadena Park, five miles northwest of Staples on the banks of the Crow Wing River. The Old Wadena site was a bustling river crossing settlement for a few years in the 1860s, but gradually disappeared when it was bypassed by the railroad.
