Appeals regarding sentencing and restitution regarding the Byron Smith murder conviction were filed with the Minnesota Supreme Court.
The appellate notice of case filing was made Wednesday.
Smith was convicted last year for the Thanksgiving Day 2012 shooting deaths of Haile Kifer, 18, and her cousin Nicholas Brady, 16, in Smith's rural Little Falls home. Smith was sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty on two counts of first- and second-degree murder. Smith was ordered to pay about $21,000 in restitution to the families of his victims.
