Several central Minnesota students placed Friday in the Class A State Speech Tournament at Lakeville North School.

There were 101 Class A teams represented at the tournament and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School still tops the Class A list with 40 state champions between 1969 and 2013, which is a third-place tie on the list of Most State Champions-All Classes. Mounds Park Academy now has 34 state champions.

Results of the speech tournament for Brainerd lakes area students include:

• Lucas Jimenez and Coleman Klimek of Staples Motley High School took first place in Duo Interpretation.

• Ellie Hansen of WHA took sixth in Creative Expression.

• Matthew Koring of WHA took second; Tia Dahmen of Cass Lake-Bena took fifth; and Alex Erickson of Staples took eighth in Humorous Interpretation.

• Zach Strickland of Staples took sixth in Discussion.

• Samantha Nupson of Cass Lake-Bena took fourth in Extemporaneous Reading.

• Jenessa Iverson of Staples took fifth in Great Speeches.

• Emma Burpo of WHA took second and Olivia Klefsaas of Staples took eighth in Serious 3rd • Emily Widman of WHA took third in Storytelling.
