Authorities identify pedestrian killed in Mission crash

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office identified Robert Joseph Hutchins of Merrifield as the 51-year-old pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle Saturday, Feb. 29, in Mission Township.

A call came in at 6:41 p.m. of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at the intersection of County Highway 3 and County Road 109. Upon arrival, deputies and first responders found Hutchins lying in the northbound lane of County Highway 3. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later transported to the Ramsey County Coroner's Office for an autopsy.

A vehicle driven by 59-year-old Marlin Jay Sunderman of Edina, was traveling north on County Highway 3 when it struck Hutchins, who appeared to be in the lane of traffic and was dressed in all black. Sunderman immediately stopped and is cooperating with law enforcement, the sheriff’s office reports.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Crosslake and Breezy Point police departments, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Mission Fire Department.
