AITKIN — Authorities are searching for a 33-year-old man who is wanted for 29 felony charges for allegedly sexually assaulting three children under the age of 5.

Aitkin County Sheriff Dan Guida Thursday, June 25, said a search warrant was issued June 10 for the arrest of Calvin James Martineau, but so far authorities have not been about to locate him in the county. The sheriff asked anyone with information on Martineau’s whereabouts to contact the sheriff's office at 218-927-7400 or 888-900-2138.

According to court documents, the Aitkin County Attorney’s Office filed 29 counts in Aitkin County District Court against Martineau, including 14 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and 15 counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving two victims between the ages of 36 months to age 13.

The felony charges claim Martineau had a significant relationship with the victims, where he allegedly sexually assaulted the girls on numerous occasions using penetration.

The maximum sentence for a felony first-degree conviction is 30 years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Martineau, he engaged in sexual contact with the girls on or about April 16, 2018, through July 31, 2019, in Spalding Township in Aitkin County.

The complaint came to the sheriff’s attention May 14, when an Aitkin County investigator learned from a Carlton County Child Protection worker that Martineau had inappropriately touched a juvenile male who will be 3 this fall; a juvenile female who will be 4 this July; and a juvenile female who turned 5 in April. The alleged assaults took place at Martineau’s residence in Spalding Township.

A search warrant was executed a month earlier at his residence. Drugs were located and the children were placed with a family member. On March 4, 2020, Carlton County Social Services took custody of the children, who were placed in foster care.

Interviews with two of the victims took place May 21 at a child advocacy center in Duluth. One victim stated Martineau sexually assaulted her more than one time, and that she saw him sexually assault another of the victims. Due to the age and and lack of communication skills of the third victim, an interview was not conducted.

On May 29, a search warrant was executed at the McGregor residence and investigators spoke to the children’s mother, who denied the children ever told her anything about Martineau inappropriately touching them. She also denied he would have ever touched the children.

When investigators spoke to Martineau he denied he had ever touched the children inappropriately.
