DULUTH - A Duluth man who told police that getting caught robbing a Lincoln Park bank in June was the “best thing that could have happened to him” has pleaded guilty to the crime in federal court.

Scott Edward Wagner, 52, entered the plea to a count of armed bank robbery in U.S. District Court on Friday, according to court records. Wagner casually tossed a bagful of money on the hood of a squad car and told an officer, “You got me,” when he was arrested three blocks from the US Bank on June 20, according to a criminal complaint. The arrest came less than an hour after the bank was robbed by a man with a knife.

“Actually, it’s worked out just as I had planned,” Wagner told officers.

Police said Wagner stated he didn’t want to hurt anyone and regretted having to scare a teller. He made off with $5,900 in cash.

Wagner doesn’t have a significant criminal history in Minnesota or Wisconsin, according to a check of online records. Court documents don’t elaborate on why he appeared eager to be arrested.
