BAXTER - Still have questions about the local options sales tax extension in Baxter?

The city is hosting an information meeting to go over the local option sales tax and what the money has been used for in the past and what are the plans for the future if voters agree to extend it.

The session is 6 p.m. Tuesday at Baxter City Hall.

"The informational meetings are being held to provide residents the opportunity to learn more about the proposed sales tax extension and have their questions answered," the city reported.

The question will be put to voters at the Nov. 4 general election.

At the last Baxter City Council meeting, Mayor Darrel Olson urged everyone to get out to vote and said if people analyze the local option sales tax, he thinks they'll come to the conclusion that having it is important.

Baxter sought and received state legislative approval to extend the 0.5 percent tax and use tax and motor vehicle excise tax.

If voters approve it, the city would be able to collect $40 million plus bond interest through Dec. 31, 2037. That amounts to $32 million to finance Baxter projects such as sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water and transportation safety improvements. And $8 million will go to finance the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport for municipal sewer and water service for airport operations and fire protection.
