BHS releases sport participation numbers

Brainerd High School has an estimated 1,200 students participating in sports this school year.

The Brainerd School Board met Monday and received a participation report for fall, winter and spring sports, as well as those in competitive activities and clubs.

Brainerd High School activities director Charlie Campbell compiled the report by school year beginning with the 2012-13 school year through this school year. This school year the district saw a decline in the amount of students who participated in sports compared to last year.

In fall sports-cross-country, football, boys' and girls' soccer, swim, tennis and volleyball-there were 383 students who participated, compared to 403 last school year. In winter sports-adapted floor hockey, boys' and girls' basketball, cheer, dance team, gymnastics, boys' and girls' hockey, Alpine ski, Nordic ski, boys swimming and wrestling-there were 391 students who participated, compared to 400 last school year. In spring sports-baseball, boys' and girls' golf, boys' and girls' lacrosse, softball, tennis and track-424 students participated, compared to 356 last year.

In competitive activities and clubs, there were ups and downs when it comes to the numbers of students who participated this year compared to last year. Numbers were:

• Robotics had 21 students this year, compared to 23 last year.

• FFA had 50 students this year, compared to 47 last year.

• Debate had 21 students this year, compared to 19 last year.

• Knowledge Bowl had 32 both years.

• Mock trial had 10 students both years.

• Speech had 22 students this year, compared to 13 this year.

• One Act Play had 19 students this year, compared to 20 last year.

• Musical had 37 students this year, compared to 41 last year.

• Mountain biking had 17 students this year, compared to 12 last year.

Numbers were not compiled for this school year for BMX (bicycle motocross), bowling, trap shooting and boys' and girls' lacrosse.
