ST. PAUL - House File 299, authored by Rep. Josh Heintzeman, R-Nisswa, on Monday passed the Veterans Affairs Division.
HF 299 exempts retired veterans' pensions from state income taxes. Currently, Minnesota is one of only a handful of states that fully tax retired military veterans' retirement pay. Heintzeman, in a news release, said that he wanted to author a bill that would incentivize more veterans to retire in Minnesota.
"I wanted to offer a bill that would encourage more veterans to retire in Minnesota," said Heintzeman. "It's unfortunate that Minnesota is one of only a handful of states that fully tax veteran retirement benefits. Our veterans deserve better and this bill is a step in the right direction - thanking our veterans for their sacrifice and service to our nation."
HF 299 has been referred to the Tax Committee where it awaits a hearing.
