Brainerd Public Schools will end its academic year by holding a carnival and recognizing its Blue Ribbon award-winning elementary schools.
The Blue Ribbon Carnival is 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 29 at Forestview Middle School. The free event for kindergarten through fourth graders and their families will take place rain or shine.
The carnival will feature live music from a student band, Solo, bounce houses, DJ music, a magician, face painting, photo booth, minnow races, petting zoo, as well as a helicopter, fire engine, ambulance and police cars for exploring.
The six BPS elementary schools, Baxter, Garfield, Harrison, Lowell, Nisswa and Riverside, were honored in the fall as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
"The Blue Ribbon Carnival is an exciting and child-focused way for the community to celebrate," Cori Reynolds, community education director, said in a release. "These awards attest to the amazing educational opportunities supported by the incredible staff and community of the Brainerd Public Schools."

Of the eight Minnesota schools honored as Blue Ribbon schools, six were local elementary schools.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
The carnival is being organized by the six elementary parent-teacher organizations and associations at each school.
Concessions will be for sale, with proceeds benefitting the elementary schools.
