A day after clearing away several inches of new snow, Brainerd lakes area residents will need to bundle up as temperatures are expected to plunge.

The National Weather Service in Duluth on Tuesday issued a wind chill advisory until noon Wednesday, Jan. 4, for most of northern Minnesota. In Brainerd, the low Tuesday night through Wednesday morning is expected to drop to 7 degrees below zero. The high temperature Wednesday is forecast to be 0 degrees, followed by a low of 15 degrees below zero Wednesday night.

The weather service reported winds 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, will help push wind chill values Wednesday morning to as low as 20-35 degrees below zero in northern Minnesota. While the wind chill advisory expires at noon Wednesday, the cold snap is expected to linger through the rest of the week, with wind chill values as low at 30 degrees below zero possible each night through Saturday. The high temperature is forecast to be 1 degree below zero on Thursday, 4 degrees on Friday and 5 degrees on Saturday. Somewhat of a warmup is expected by the start of next week, with high temperatures of 11 degrees on Sunday and 19 degrees on Monday.

The weather service also is warning of blowing and drifting snow possible due to the fresh snowpack and lingering falling snow in northern Minnesota. The National Weather Service in Duluth reported the most recent snow totals Monday through Tuesday morning as:

• 5.7 inches Pillager,

• 5.1 inches Brainerd,

• 3 inches Crosby-Ironton,

• 2.6 inches Aitkin.
