The deadline is approaching to nominate nonprofits and individuals for several awards recognizing distinguished service in the lakes area.

Brainerd Community Action, in partnership with the Brainerd Jaycees, is accepting nominations for the following Distinguished Service Awards: Outstanding Nonprofit of the Year, Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year and Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Typical characteristics of a successful nonprofit include a proactive board of directors, dedicated staff and unwavering support from community partners, a news release stated. To recognize a standout nonprofit with these characteristics, the award is presented to an organization displaying leadership, integrity and management skills required for success. The Youth Volunteer of the Year award recognizes youths of the community, typically 13-18 years old, who make a difference in the community through volunteerism and service work. Open to anyone in the Brainerd lakes area who exemplifies the ideal of service to humanity.

Criteria considered for Citizen of the Year includes volunteer services above and beyond normal employment or business pursuits contributing to the welfare of the community for an extended period of time.

Nomination letters should include the nominee's occupation, details of volunteer work and length of service, offices assumed in organizations, the impact of the nominee's contributions to the lakes area and letters of support from organizations that have benefited from their services. Letters should be no longer than four pages.
