Brainerd declares snow emergency in anticipation of storm

The city noted since this is a multiple-day storm, parking restrictions on city streets will not be enforced until 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, when the snow emergency is in effect. City plows will work throughout the day Thursday to keep Snow Emergency Routes and other major streets open until the official snow emergency is declared early Friday morning.

Crow Wing County reported its snowplows are ready and plan to begin operations at 3 a.m. Thursday and continue throughout the day. Plow operators will resume their work at 1 a.m. Friday.

The county noted plowing times are subject to change depending on the storm's intensity.

"Please give yourself extra time to get to your destination," the county reported in a news release. "Roads are expected to be snow-covered most of Wednesday night and all day Thursday."

Sports events were already being canceled Wednesday afternoon, including a Wadena-Deer Creek boys basketball game at Royalton and a Brainerd Warrior boys swimming and diving invitational slated Thursday, a boys hockey tournament at Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday and Friday, among others on a list that may continue to grow depending on weather conditions.

Brainerd snow emergency plowing schedule

Snowplows will start at 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, on the following streets but the city notes parking restrictions will not be in place until Friday.

• All Snow Emergency Routes,

• All north-south streets or streets that generally run north-south.

On Friday, snowplows will start at 5 a.m. on the following streets:

• All Snow Emergency Routes,

• All north-south streets or streets that generally run north-south,

• All streets west of the Mississippi River,

• All Streets south of Wright Street.

Saturday, snowplows will commence at 7 a.m. on the following streets:

• Cleanup all east-west streets or streets that generally run east-west,

• City staff will plow the entire city Friday with cleanup on east-west streets commencing on Saturday.

Those parked on an east-west street Friday, or streets identified for Day 2 parking restrictions

on the snow emergency maps, will have their vehicles plowed around. Cars parked on Snow Emergency Routes will be ticketed and towed immediately commencing Friday.

Parking is banned starting Friday on city streets the day they are scheduled to be plowed until they have been plowed from curb to curb. All vehicles plowed around will be issued a $25 parking citation. Vehicles that are not moved within 48 hours of being plowed around will be towed at the owner's expense.

Downtown Brainerd

Snow removal in the Downtown Business District will start at 3 a.m. Thursday and Friday, Parking will be banned on the following streets:

• Front Street from South Sixth Street to South Eighth Street,

• Laurel Street from South Sixth Street to South Eighth Street,

• South Seventh Street from Maple Street to Front Street.

Parking is banned on streets until they have been plowed in their entirety. All vehicles parked will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense.
