A 25-year-old Brainerd man faces criminal charges following an alleged physical domestic dispute at a residence in the presence of four young children.

Devon Deshawn Gordon was charged Feb. 7 in Crow Wing County District Court with two felony counts of domestic assault and threatening another with violence.

According to the probable cause document filed in court against Gordon, Brainerd police were dispatched at 5:27 p.m. Feb. 5 to the domestic dispute at a residence where the victim reported a man known to her — Gordon — was refusing to leave her residence and he was threatening her with a piece of wood.

The 911 dispatcher advised officers they continued to ask the victim more questions in regards to the reported domestic assault and could hear a man in the background getting more and more agitated with every answer she would give, the complaint stated.

Officers arrived on scene and observed four children in the residence and Gordon stated he was going to grab his stuff and leave. Officers took Gordon outside and searched his person and found a phillips head screwdriver sticking out of his front pants pocket.

The victim stated the incident began earlier in the day during a grocery shopping trip when Gordon did not like her son hanging his head out a parked car window trying to speak to her when she was outside the car. The report stated Gordon rolled up the window and her son got scared and began freaking out and an argument ensued. Gordon reportedly started screaming at the victim and that he was going to beat her up while in close proximity to her face. They then drove back to her residence.

When they arrived back at her residence, the children went into the residence and while she and Gordon were in the garage, he grabbed her by the neck of her sweatshirt, tied a knot and "basically choked" her, but she said the act did not obstruct her ability to breathe. She was able to pull herself away from Gordon, but he advanced toward her and blocked her way to get back into the residence. Gordon reportedly told her he was going to "headbutt" her if she went in the door and he was 1-2 inches from her face and his fists were both clenched. She was able to make it into the residence and he followed her and had a piece of wood that had broken off of her coffee table on an earlier date. Gordon reportedly walked around the house with the piece of wood in his hand and continued to tell her something to the effect of "on my dead brothers I'm going to beat you ...," the complaint stated. The victim called her mother and then called law enforcement because he continued to yell and threaten her.

According to court records, Gordon has prior domestic violence offences, including the most recent one — a January 2017 conviction for a felony level domestic abuse no contact order violation in Hennepin County.

Gordon, who continued to be in Crow Wing County Jail Sunday, is scheduled to appear next in court Feb. 27.
