A 22-year-old Brainerd man faces domestic assault charges following an incident on Oct. 18.
Wyatt Martin Walter A. Peterson was charged Oct. 19 in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd for felony domestic assault by strangulation, gross misdemeanor domestic assault and two misdemeanors-obstructing the legal process and disorderly conduct.
According to the criminal complaint filed against Peterson, the victim called the Brainerd Police Department Oct. 18 explaining she was just assaulted by Peterson, who is known to her. The victim stated the two got into a verbal argument and he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her down on the living room sofa, where he continued to strangle her with both hands around her throat causing her to be unable to breathe, the complaint stated.
While choking the victim, Peterson stated something to the effect of, "I didn't choke you enough to kill you." The victim got off the sofa and he pushed her down again. Eventually, she was able to escape the residence and call police. The victim stated Peterson choked her in the past.
Officers went to the residence and Peterson was told he was under arrest for domestic assault. At this point, Peterson began to back up. Officers ordered him not to and grabbed his arm. He then pulled away and began physically resisting officers' attempt to arrest him, the complaint stated. He was eventually arrested and transported to jail.
