Brainerd man sentenced for stabbing brother

A 23-year-old Brainerd man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault where he stabbed his brother in the neck last August at a residence on the 4000 block of Sweet Road in Brainerd.

A 23-year-old Brainerd man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault where he stabbed his brother in the neck last August at a residence on the 4000 block of Sweet Road in Brainerd.

Jacob Thomas Lovejoy was sentenced Feb. 8 in Crow Wing County District Court by Judge Earl Maus to nine years and two months-or 110 months-in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. Lovejoy was given credit of 184 days of time served and will pay a $210 fine.

Lovejoy was charged Aug. 11, 2016, with second-degree attempted murder with intent and first-degree assault to cause great bodily harm. Lovejoy was convicted of the assault charge and the murder charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The case

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office was called at 5:20 p.m. Aug. 9, 2016, to a report of a stabbing victim in the emergency room at Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. The sheriff's office reported the victim, a 27-year-old male from Brainerd, was flown to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale where he underwent surgery.

According to the probable cause document filed, officers learned the victim and Lovejoy were outside the residence and a female was inside the residence. The female heard them argue and when she stepped outside, she witnessed Lovejoy stab the victim in the neck with a knife, the complaint stated. Lovejoy fled the scene and the female took the victim to the hospital in her vehicle.

Medical personnel determined the victim was stabbed in the neck/upper chest area and he was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center for surgery. The victim survived and was in stable condition, the complaint stated.
