Two area elementary schools are gearing up for glow runs to raise money for their schools.

Funds for new playground equipment, special events and positive behavioral interventions and support services are on the line at Riverside Elementary School, where students will run Friday, Feb. 8, aiming to raise more than $12,000 in the school's first Boosterthon Glow Run.

On Monday, Feb. 11, Baxter Elementary students will run for field trips, guided reading tables and flexible classroom seating, with the goal of raising $18,500. This year's glow run is the second consecutive event at Baxter.

Students at both schools are taking pledges from family and friends for each lap run in the gym. Their goal is 30-35 laps per student. Baxter Elementary Parent Teacher Organization President Jeanne King said donors may also make a flat donation instead of pledging per lap.

The schools are partnering with Boosterthon, a school fundraising company that brings in lights, DJs and all the equipment needed for the glow runs.

"It's a really good program that they have," said Molly Rider, behavioral interventionist at Riverside, of Boosterthon, noting the glow run gives students a chance for exercise and character-building and raises money without them having to sell anything

Both events run all day, with the different grade levels taking turns at the run.
