Many downtown crosswalks are now bright blue, with some also featuring depictures of the city's iconic water towers.

Those traversing downtown Brainerd in recent weeks have likely noticed a colorful difference.

City staffers have painted several crosswalks bright blue and stenciled white water towers on a few.

The city council approved the measure in March, after the idea cropped up with the city’s parking commission, members of which talked about wayfinding downtown and creating a more pleasant experience for people when getting out of their cars and walking.

The colored crosswalks are meant to tie the downtown area together and will hopefully entice visitors to park a little farther away from their destination and walk by showing them they are still in the downtown vicinity.
