A shooting complaint reported Wednesday, April 17, near Garfield Elementary School in Brainerd resulted in the school going into a soft lockdown.

Garfield Principal Jodi Kennedy sent out a Skylert audio message to families at 1:15 p.m. informing them the school was in a soft lockdown, meaning all the classroom and exterior doors were locked. Kennedy reported the Brainerd Police Department was investigating an isolated incident in the northeast Brainerd neighborhood. Kennedy stated the students were safe and the school was resuming all activities indoors.

"We have had many people calling, and we want to let everyone know all the children are safe and we are inside a locked facility," Kennedy stated. "We wanted to alleviate any worry parents may have as people on Facebook said the incident happened in the school and it did not."

Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston reported in an email police received a shooting complaint in the area of the 800 block of 10th Avenue Northeast-about two blocks away from the school, located at 1102 10th Ave. NE. The caller reported it sounded like one shot coming from a shotgun.

Investigating officers determined it was an illegal firework set off at a residence in the area, McQuiston stated.
