BURNSVILLE - A Burnsville man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for molesting a girl he used to baby-sit.

Gerald Duane Packard, 71, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct; four other first- and second-degree counts were dismissed. He was sentenced Nov. 5 in Dakota County District Court.

According to the criminal complaint, Packard began touching the girl sexually when she was 8 year old and later made the girl touch him. Packard was accused of molesting the girl dozens of times over the next several years. The girl told investigators Packard had sex with her twice when she was 12 years old.

The girl said she never reported the abuse when it was happening between 2008 and 2013, but she finally told her therapist and her mother in May after she began dealing with anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Packard admitted abusing the girl 30 to 50 times during those years and said he finally left the state for a year to get away from her, according to the complaint.
