Camp Ripley: Minnesota Guard job shadow program builds for the future

CAMP RIPLEY - For the fifth year employees of Camp Ripley participated in a job shadow program for the purpose of education and professional development.

"Job shadowing is effective for students where 'seeing' is more beneficial than 'telling,'" according to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dan Bednarek of the Camp Ripley Visitors Bureau.

The job shadowing program at Camp Ripley provided students an opportunity to observe working professionals in several different mechanical and technical fields on post.

"The goal is to help students learn about career options as well as the techniques and skills required for different occupations while understanding the critical connections between school, work, and goal attainment," added Bednarek.

The program was started in 2010, primarily supported by John Sallden and Loren Boyum, former Camp Ripley employees. By 2012, the Little Falls School community encouraged the program to provide a course instructor and class credit for the students.

Students from Little Falls High School participate followed employees at the consolidated maintenance area on Camp Ripley as well as the communications department, environmental department, public affairs department, aviation department and the fire department.

"Working on these vehicles has opened my eyes to what mechanical work is really all about," said Jordan Lease, junior at Little Falls High School, shadowing in the maintenance facility on Camp Ripley.

"Bottom line - this is a great opportunity for us to get out and try different jobs in our community," said Little Falls junior Katie Mammenga. "This has also helped me towards making my decision to join the military after high school."
