More than 1,000 pounds of bird seed might have helped to avert further damage to a business after a vehicle was driven through its wall Saturday.
Shelly Stanley, an owner of the Wild Bird Store - Little Farm Market located at 516 C. St. N.E., said stacks of 50-pound bags of bird seed totaling 1,200 pounds lined the north wall where Allen Watson, 58, Crosby, crashed around 4:22 p.m.
The Brainerd Police Department reported Watson was traveling westbound on C Street when he went unconscious. Watson apparently ran into a sign at KFC, 522 C. St. N.E., and a fire hydrant before crashing into the store.
No one was in the closed business at the time of the crash, which destroyed two windows and damaged the stucco exterior and cedar interior.
The driver did not appear to be injured but was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center as a precaution. No citations were issued by the Brainerd Police Department.

The business was able to open as usual Monday morning with temporary boards covering the damaged wall. An estimate on the cost of the damage was not available.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office, Brainerd Fire Department and North Memorial Ambulance assisted at the scene.
