Cass County benefit distributes $5,100 to youths exhibiting at state fair

The Cass County Friends of Youth State Fair Scholarship Fund has awarded $5,103 to 44 county 4-Hers to help defray their expenses for exhibiting at the State Fair.

The Cass County Friends of Youth State Fair Scholarship Fund has awarded $5,103 to 44 county 4-Hers to help defray their expenses for exhibiting at the State Fair.

Backus residents Barb Frederick and Leo and Sue Elyea, co-chairs of the fundraiser, announced the awards following a June 14 benefit golf tournament at Black Bear Golf Course south of Backus and a fundraising drive supported by individuals, businesses and organizations, including veterans groups.

The funds help pay for travel, lodging, meals and entry fees for those showing livestock and entering other exhibits at the fair. The youth were reimbursed $1,050 for lodging and meals and $4,053 for other expenses, including help with these costs: a $145 fair fee assessed for non-livestock events; $222.50 for livestock competition, plus an added $30 for showing beef cattle; $65 for showing horses and another $8 for each class entered.

This was the third year of the golf tournament and fundraiser organized by Frederick and the Elyeas. The three came up with idea for a fundraiser in 2013 when they were concerned that many Cass County youth who win contests at the county level are unable to afford the expenses associated with the trip to St. Paul to exhibit at the State Fair. Leo Elyea, an avid golfer, organized the golf tournament in addition to assisting with other fundraising.

Cass and Hubbard county organizations, businesses and individuals, including veterans groups, sponsored golf teams, purchased hole sponsorships and donated cash, prizes, advertising and other services to the tournament or made direct contributions to the scholarship fund.

"We are again deeply grateful for the generosity of area businesses, organizations and individuals participating for helping our youth compete at the Fair,'' Frederick and the Elyeas said in a joint statement accompanying the award announcement.
