Central Lakes College is offering the basic rider course for motorcycle riders in August.

The course includes 14.5 hours of integrated instruction with 4.5 hours in the classroom and 10 hours of practice on a training motorcycle. The fee for the course is $180.

The course is divided into two phases: level one concentrates on motorcycle familiarization, clutch control, throttle control, riding posture and the four basic skills: straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping.

Level two includes limited-space maneuvers, counter-steering, cornering and swerving. Minnesota law requires motorcyclists under age 18 to pass an approved rider skills training course.

While no previous motorcycle riding experience is required, it can be beneficial. Students must be able to ride a bicycle and must possess a valid driver's license or motor vehicle instruction permit.

Each student must furnish his or her own protective clothing and Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Perfect attendance is mandatory. If a rider wants his or her motorcycle endorsement, you must have your motorcycle permit before the course starts.

The course is taught by a Minnesota Safety Foundation certified instructor at the CLC Brainerd campus.

The course is offered over two different weekends in August. The first is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Aug. 8, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Aug. 9. The second is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Aug. 22, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Aug. 23.

Riders should register by July 31 for the first weekend or Aug. 14 for the second weekend. Register online at clcmn.augusoft.net and click on courses. For additional information call 218-855-8118.
