The Central Lakes College Upward Bound program recently received three grants totaling $3.86 million over five years.

Two grants, the Mille Lacs County Upward Bound grant and the Todd County Upward Bound grant, are renewals of current grants. New is a Crow Wing County Upward Bound grant applying directly to students at Brainerd High School.

With the funds, CLC will hire an assistant director of Upward Bound and two additional academic advisers to assist students. The Upward Bound program provides educational services to modest-income and first-generation high school students who potentially would be the first generation to graduate from a four-year college. The program provides them with skills to help them graduate from high school, enroll in a college or university and complete their post-secondary education.

"We are very fortunate to have been awarded a third TRIO Upward Bound grant," said Charles Black Lance, director of TRIO programs at CLC, in a news release. "We serve students during the academic year in their respective high schools, as well as during the summer as part of our academic summer program, which is held on the Central Lakes College."
