Central Lakes College welding students recently crafted a large sign for the Timber Lake Hotel in Staples.

The college partnered with Hy-Tec Construction on the project to craft the 27 feet long, 14 feet tall sign on the side of the hotel. The students used welding technology to design the logo, which was cut in pieces on a plasma table.

Hy-Tec Construction engineered and installed a mounting system for the letters and the parts were powdercoated by Gull Lake Sandblasting & Powdercoating. Hy-Tec Construction installed the sign on the building.

"We were excited to do it and it is another project that students can learn a great deal from, starting with the basic fabrication of the project, all the way to the collaboration of all the different players involved with the construction," said David Otto, CLC welding instructor, in a news release. "The cool part for the students involved is every time they drive through Staples, they can say 'I helped build that sign' and they can take a little pride in the work."
