Collision leaves one man dead, two injured

A recreational vehicle swerved into a Minnesota Department of Transportation truck killing one person and injuring two others, including a Baxter man.

A recreational vehicle swerved into a Minnesota Department of Transportation truck killing one person and injuring two others, including a Baxter man.

The crash occurred about 1:54 p.m. Thursday near Champlin in Anoka County.

Gene Schimmele, 58, of Baxter, driver of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) truck suffered non life-threatening injuries. The RV driver, Leo Delonais, 63 of White Bear Lake, was killed in the crash. Delonais' passenger and wife, Mary O'Connor, 82, was seriously injured. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The Minnesota State Patrol reported neither Delonais nor O'Connor were wearing seat belts.

Schimmele, who was seat belted, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

The RV was traveling west in the right lane when it swerved and struck the state truck on the right shoulder. The MnDOT truck, one of three work vehicles on the site, was set up to do shoulder work.

The Anoka County Sheriff's office and the Ramsey County Sheriff's office assisted at the scene.
