DETROIT LAKES - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is inviting public comment on an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for the proposed expansion of a cattle feedlot in north central Wadena County, east of Menagha. The 30-day comment period will end June 26, 2014.

DHS Farms is proposing to expand its cattle feedlot operations from 300 head to 3,500 head. Five of 20 existing large pens will be converted to a managed pasture system with 11 defined feedlots. Construction is expected to occur during the 2014 building season.

To protect groundwater and surface waters, the project will include construction of a drainage system to direct runoff from the feedlots to a lined earthen basin, as well as concrete scape alleys and storage slabs to hold the animal waste until it is removed and applied as a fertilizer to area farmland.

No changes are planned for the total confinement poultry facility located at the site.

The EAW is a preliminary environmental review of how a proposed project could potentially affect the environment. The EAW also helps the MPCA determine if an Environmental Impact Statement (a more in-depth environmental review) is needed.
