With warmer temperatures in the forecast, spring may unofficially be here.
Spring can bring new unexpected hazards to roadways, the Crow Wing County Highway Department stated in a news release. Soft spots, potholes, motorcycles, bicyclists, animals and people are now more noticeable.
Soft spots are expected when frost begins to soften up the soil beneath the road. The softening can create humps or dips and lead to potholes or even roadway blow outs. Motorists are advised to avoid hitting these areas by being aware of these conditions and driving at safe speeds.
Motorcyclists may be out riding with the warmer temperatures. The roadways may still have sand in areas from the winter's snow and ice control efforts. The sand, mainly on curves and at intersections, can contribute to a motorcycle's tires losing traction with the road. When in a vehicle, motorists are advised to watch for motorcyclists also using the roadway.
Bicyclists and pedestrians will also be using the roadways more. Those riding a bike or walking are reminded to wear visible clothing for the benefit of motorists, and motorists are reminded to keep a watchful eye.
