Crow Wing County released an annual report detailing what happens when residents pay their property taxes.

The latest Popular Annual Financial Report shows how tax dollars are divided up. The report sums up the financial position of the county in a simple format for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2016.

"We've condensed certain key elements of our annual financial report into a quick, one-stop- shop for our constituents," said Jason Rausch, Crow Wing County finance director, in a news release. "We've also added other components that we feel help tell the entire Crow Wing County story."

Residents pay property taxes to Crow Wing County, although not all of those funds are kept by the county. Crow Wing County acts as a go-between and collects funds levied by cities or townships, school districts and other special districts. These funds are later distributed to these other districts.

On average, for all property taxes collected, the county keeps 31 cents of every dollar to provide county services. That 31 cents goes towards things like public safety; highways; courts; property tax administration; water and wetlands; and community, land and administrative services.

The report also includes information on the local option sales tax, comparisons to neighboring counties, general fund expenditures and revenues and a look at the local labor workforce.
