Crow Wing County Land Services is requesting public comment on a proposal to designate an additional 4 miles of existing trails and remove 2 miles of existing grant-in-aid trails as an update to Pine Center Trails.

This multiple use recreation trail system is within Roosevelt Township in southeastern Crow Wing County. The proposed trail expansion area encompasses over 240 acres of Crow Wing County managed public land and 480 acres of state managed forestland. This trail proposal would expand the current trail system from about 20 miles to 22 miles.

Of the proposed 4 miles of new trail, 1.3 miles is considered unmanaged and undesignated by Crow Wing County and is considered a minimum maintenance forest trail. The remaining 2.7 miles is designated minimum maintenance and managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Department of Parks and Trails. All 4 miles of the proposed trail expansion are currently used by vehicles for recreation, public access and forest management purposes. Of the 2 miles of existing trails to be removed, 1.5 miles is currently located on gravel township roads. The remaining half-mile is on an existing forest road. In addition to the removal of existing trails, one of the existing trailheads will be eliminated and the remaining trailhead will be improved and expanded.

The proposal and criteria evaluation can be accessed at crowwing.us/289/Recreation . Copies are also available 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday from the land services department at 322 Laurel St., Brainerd, or by contacting the department at 218-824-1010.

Written comments may be emailed to landservices@crowwing.us with “Pine Center Trail” in the subject line, faxed to 218-824-1126, or mailed to Crow Wing County Land Services Department, Attn: Pine Center Trail, Land Services Building, 322 Laurel St., Suite No. 15, Brainerd, MN 56401.
Written comments on the proposed trail system modifications will be accepted through March 22.
