Crash near Backus claims life of 29-year-old man

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the state patrol.

BACKUS — A 29-year-old Grand Rapids man was killed during the early morning hours Sunday, May 2, when the car he was driving rolled multiple times and crashed south of Backus.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the fatal crash at 1:31 a.m. A 2006 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south on 44th Avenue Southwest, south of Fourth Street Southwest, when it left the roadway into the east ditch. The Chevy struck a driveway and rolled multiple times.

The driver identified as Vincent David Kordiak was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the state patrol reported. Alcohol was believed to be involved, according to the crash report.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office and Backus Fire Department assisted the state patrol at the scene.
