AITKIN-A 57-year-old Aitkin man died June 1 in the Aitkin County Jail as the result of suicide.

Correction officers reported Monte James Tibbetts was walking around in his cell area at 4:57 a.m. in the Aitkin County Jail, according to the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office. He was discovered on the floor at 5:24 a.m.

Tibbetts apparently twisted a bed sheet around his neck after anchoring it to the desk, the sheriff's office reported. Resuscitation efforts by corrections officers and North Memorial Ambulance personnel were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead in the jail.

The Aitkin Police Department assisted at the scene and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office assisted with the investigation. An autopsy is being conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's office reported in a news release Tibbetts was in the county jail while awaiting arraignment on felony charges. According to court records, the Aitkin County Attorney's Office filed five felony charges against Tibbetts May 31, along with a gross misdemeanor charge.

Tibbetts was accused of several criminal sexual conduct charges, including second-degree sexual assault, second-degree involving a significant relationship, second-degree involving multiple acts within a significant relationship, third-degree involving a significant relationship with a victim aged 16-17, and third-degree involving multiple acts within a significant relationship. Tibbetts also faced a gross misdemeanor charge of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a nonconsensual sexual act.

Tibbetts was scheduled for his first appearance at 11:30 a.m. June 1 in Aitkin County District Court. The county attorney's office dismissed the charges against Tibbetts June 7.
