A Crow Wing County jury found a 39-year-old Brainerd man guilty June 6 of sexually assaulting a woman he met through a social media app.
Isaiah Stephen Schuety was found guilty of three felonies-first-degree criminal sexual conduct using penetration and great bodily harm, third-degree criminal sexual conduct using force and third-degree stalking. The jury trial was June 5-6 in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd in front of Judge David Ten Eyck.
According to the criminal complaint, a woman contacted the Crosby Police Department on June 15, 2017, stating she was raped by a man with the possible first name of "Isaiah" at her Crosby residence. The woman reported she met the man, later identified as Schuety, on a social media application called MeetMe. She invited Schuety over for dinner and a movie and Schuety started kissing her. She told him no, and he grabbed her by the throat but then backed off for a while before grabbing her by the arm.
Schuety then led the woman into the bedroom by her arm. The woman stated Schuety sexually assaulted her and used both hands to strangle her around her throat to the point where she could not breathe, the complaint stated. The woman was extremely fearful of Schuety, and indicated her young child was present at the residence during the assault.
The woman described Schuety as bigger, muscular and bald with some facial hair around his chin area. He also had a "Never Say Die" tattoo on his forearm. Schuety admitted to the woman he was 37, not 26 as he had indicated on his MeetMe profile.
The woman told the Crosby officer Schuety sent her a text after he left and she responded back with something to the effect of, "I told you I didn't want to have sex ... I wanted to sleep ... Please leave me alone." He did not text back after that.
Officers made several attempts to contact Schuety by telephone, but were unable to, the complaint stated. Nearly a year later on May 5, 2018, police learned the possible location of Schuety's residence in Brainerd. Schuety initially seemed unsure about knowing the victim, but after viewing a photo recalled the night in question. Schuety stated he had consensual sexual intercourse that night, according to the complaint. He said the woman became weird after sex and mentioned something about him choking her.
The woman went to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby and completed a sexual assault evidence kit, which was later submitted to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for testing for possible DNA identification. The DNA from the kit matched Schuety's DNA swab taken by officers.
The sentencing date for Schuety has not yet been determined. Schuety remains in custody in the Crow Wing County Jail.
