A 38-year-old Crosslake woman died after an all-terrain vehicle crash Saturday, April 10, in the Paul Bunyan State Forest in Thorpe Township.
The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 3:26 p.m. of a single ATV crash involving a female who was found unresponsive.
Deputies and medical personnel responded to the remote area on the Thorpe Tower Forest Road and located the crash scene. Cassandra Berg was pronounced dead at the scene, after a Nevis first responder and sheriff’s deputy performed CPR until North Memorial Health Ambulance arrived on scene. Extensive efforts to revive Berg were unsuccessful, according to the sheriff’s office.
The investigation showed Berg was traveling northbound on Thorpe Tower Forest Road on a 2010 Polaris 500 ATV when she collided with an embankment and lost control. The ATV overturned and pinned her under the machine.
Another rider in Berg’s group was no longer able to see Berg, so he turned around to look for her. He then found Berg underneath the ATV and unresponsive and began CPR.

Berg was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol was involved in the crash, according to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, which is still investigating the crash.
