The Crow Wing County Landfill increased tipping fees.
The tipping fees are user charges for dropping off various items and garbage at the landfill. These fees help to keep the landfill completely self-funded and free from using taxpayer dollars, a county news release stated.
The fee increase will address the future cost of an alternate treatment process to treat leachate generated by the landfill. Leachate is the liquid that drains, or leaches, from a landfill and can be harmful to the environment if not treated properly.
Commercial haulers will experience a $5 per ton increase. For residents, tipping fees will increase from $8.08 to $10 per cubic yard; a bag of garbage increases from $3.49 to $4; and recyclable mattresses and box springs increase from $6 to $7. On April 1, the landfill expanded its hours of operation to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open Monday through Saturday weekly. The landfill is located at 15732 Highway 210, just east of Brainerd.
