Crow Wing County suspends mattress recycling service

The Crow Wing County mattress recycling program is on hold until further notice, but mattresses may still be brought in for landfill disposal.

“The mattress program that we have, the recycling place in Duluth … they are in indefinitely, until further notice, closed,” County Board Chairman Paul Koering said at the Tuesday, April 14, board meeting.

The company that accepts mattresses for recycling has temporarily stopped taking deliveries, so the mattresses will be landfilled. The landfill disposal fee is $28 for mattresses of all sizes.

“We’ve got three semi loads of mattresses ready for recycling with no place to go and so we have no choice,” Koering said of landfill disposal.

Residents may wish to hold onto their mattresses and bring them in at a later date for recycling. Another notice will be sent out once the program is back up and running.

Residents who choose to visit the county landfill at 15732 Highway 210 to dispose of their mattresses need to remain in their vehicles, and a staffer will attend to the resident.
