Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District Awards community centered runoff reduction grants

The Crow Wing Soil and Water District (SWCD) awarded $59,444.31 in grants to local organizations in Crow Wing County (CWC) for seven clean water projects.

The Crow Wing Soil and Water District (SWCD) awarded $59,444.31 in grants to local organizations in Crow Wing County (CWC) for seven clean water projects.

The SWCD received eight applications, submitted for a total of $85,044.31 in grant funding requests.

"We are excited for this opportunity to bring locally paid sales tax dollars back to Crow Wing County. This will allow local citizens and community organizations to access the Clean Water funds and determine how legacy dollars are spent," said Melissa Barrick, SWCD district manager.

Funding was provided by the Board of Water & Soil Resources through the Community Partners Grant (Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment, Clean Water Fund, approved by voters in 2008).

Grantees awarded are the following:

• Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA); 2014-2016 WAPOA Shoreline Restoration Contest; $15,000.

• Discovery Woods Montessori School: 2014 Stormwater Filtering Play Area Project; $16,752.

• Northland Arboretum; Floating Island and plants; $1,050.

• United Church of Christ; 2014 Stormwater Retention and Infiltration Project; $6,994.

• Central Lakes College; 2014 Parking Lot Runoff Project; $945.

• Upper Hay Lake Association; 2014 Shoreline Restoration Project; $14,500.

• Kenney Lake Neighborhood Watch Group; 2014 Demonstration Project; $4,203.31.

Local organizations provide matching cash or in-kind dollars for the projects. The applications were reviewed and ranked by an interagency team that included Crow Wing County, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, University of Minnesota Extension, The Nature Conservancy, Mississippi Headwaters Board, and Crow Wing SWCD.

In 2015, the Crow Wing SWCD will have a second round of competitive grants to award in the amount of about $40,500.
