DAR members attend Continental Congress event

Five members from the Captain Robert Orr Chapter-Daughters of the American Revolution June 16-24 attended the 127th Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

Five members from the Captain Robert Orr Chapter-Daughters of the American Revolution June 16-24 attended the 127th Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

Faye Leach, state regent; Sue Duff-Erkel, chapter regent; Lisa Staber, chapter registrar; and Chris Palm and Wilma Roberts were among the more than 3,400 members and guests from 50 states and several foreign countries attending the conference.

Conference activities were centered in DAR's Constitution Hall and included award ceremonies,

educational opportunities, business sessions and entertainment by the Navy, Marines and Army bands at the formal events.

Duff-Erkel was recognized as Minnesota's outstanding state member for her work and support of Vietnam veterans and veteran events. She was presented with a Commemorative Medal and the Department of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration Certificate of Appreciation. The chapter was also recognized for second place in the North Central Division for Commemorative Events.

The Captain Robert Orr Chapter-DAR members recorded 2,879 volunteer hours in community service in the Brainerd lakes area in 2017. Members participated in literacy promotion by donating books and other items and reading weekly at public libraries. Members Tina Snell and Sandy Erickson helped to establish a military lending library at Fort Ripley. Historic preservation was promoted by restoring the historical markers in Gregory Park, honoring J. Gregory Smith, for whom the park is named, and a memorial in Aitkin for Aitkin County soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. The chapter contributes to the women's shelter.

Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, non-political women's service organization

dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. Membership is open to any woman older than age 18 who can prove her lineage to a Revolutionary Patriot. The local chapter meets the second Saturday monthly February through October at various locations and welcomes new members.
