State Representatives John Ward, DFL-Baxter, and Joe Radinovich , DFL-Crosby, are encouraging Minnesota homeowners and renters to apply for a property tax refund.
Applications must be submitted to the Minnesota Department of Revenue by Friday, Aug. 15.
"Should you need any assistance with finding eligibility requirements, application forms or instructions, please do not hesitate to contact us," said Ward said in a news release. "We want to make sure eligible taxpayers receive the refund they are entitled to."
"Over the last decade, Minnesotans have faced rapidly increasing property taxes, hurting families and seniors," Radinovich said in a news release. "The Legislature invested more money into refunds so many individuals will receive bigger refunds while others will receive a refund for the first time. Thanks to this direct relief, we're finally bending the property tax curve. We encourage folks who are eligible to apply for these refunds."
A recent report from the non-partisan House Research Department report found that property taxes will drop by $49 million this year - the first decrease since 2002, the lawmakers said. Homeowners will see the most significant decrease. Statewide, homeowner property taxes are decreasing by $171 million in 2014, a 5.2 percent decrease from 2013.
