There’s money hidden somewhere in Brainerd, and it’s free for the taking. All you have to do is find it.
Deerwood Bank has placed five envelopes with undisclosed amounts of cash somewhere in Brainerd.
Just where and how much money? That’s up to you to find out.
The initiative is following suit with the hidden cash craze in California right now, where a man is hiding sums of money and handing out clues via Twitter to people.
Here in Brainerd, residents can find crisp bills straight from Deerwood’s vault.
The bank is calling it Deerwood Bank Vault Samples.
The purpose behind the unique treasure hunt is to promote locally owned community banks and local businesses, said Rachel Carpenter, Deerwood Bank, retail banking manager in Baxter.
“This is our way of supporting local business and giving back to the community,” she said. “Instead of cash hidden outside (like in California), we wanted to bring it local and have traffic driven to local businesses.”
Carpenter continued, “It’s kind of like random acts of kindness ... It’s a fun do-good, feel good thing. Shop local, community bank local.”
If the hidden cash idea takes off and people search for it, the bank will hide more money at another Brainerd location. Then a third round could happen in Bemidji or Grand Rapids, with the bank’s locations there.
First clue: “Feeling Lucky? Place your bet here.”
