A 36-year-old Deerwood man faces felony stalking and domestic assault charges after grabbing a woman by her throat at a Brainerd residence.

Gary Matthew Granholm was charged Aug. 7 in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd with two felonies-stalking and domestic assault by strangulation-- and two gross misdemeanors of domestic assault and endangering a child.

According to the probable cause court document filed against Granholm, a physical domestic assault was reported to Brainerd police at 8:29 p.m. Aug. 5 at a Brainerd residence. Granholm, who was known to the victim, allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat.

The victim stated she and Granholm were arguing, but denied anything physical had taken place. However, while the officer was talking with her he noted her voice appeared raspy and was cracking. The victim also appeared to keep grabbing at her throat and rubbing it as if it were sore, the complaint stated.

The officer then spoke with two minor children who both stated they had witnessed Granholm grab hold of the woman by the neck. One of the children also stated he saw Granholm shove her towards the kitchen sink after he grabbed her by the throat, which then caused her to fall to the ground.

According to the complaint, police have responded to the house in the past for previous domestic disturbances between Granholm and the victim.

Granholm was previously convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault on July 21, 2010.

Granholm's next court appearance is scheduled at 9 a.m. Sept. 18 in front of Judge David Ten Eyck. Granholm is no longer in custody.
