Staff at the Brainerd Dispatch earned third-place recognition for three separate categories in the 2018-19 Better Newspaper Contest, among 15 total awards earned by the daily newspaper.
Receiving third-place recognition was the Dispatch's classified advertising section, typography and design, and the newsroom's mental health coverage.
In comments about the Dispatch's classified advertising section, third among all Minnesota dailies, a judge wrote: "Great use of space."
Regarding the Dispatch's typography and design, third among dailies 10,000 and over, a judge stated: "Amazing front pages! Interior pages are a bit too crowded, but well designed."
Each year, the Minnesota Newspaper Association selects a new topic for its "Category X" award. The most recent contest sought work on mental health. The Dispatch newsroom earned third place among all Minnesota dailies.
