Dispatch's Kohls earns 1st place for press photographer's portfolio

Brainerd Dispatch photographer Steve Kohls earned first place for press photographer's portfolio in the 2018-19 Better Newspaper Contest.

The award recognized portfolios among all Minnesota dailies entered in the contest, run by the Minnesota Newspaper Association. Describing Kohls' submission, a judge wrote: "Really solid body of work. Great mix of features, sports features and spot news. It was really a joy to scroll through."

Kohls also earned third place in the portrait and personality photo category among all dailies with one of his photos from the Sertoma Lift-A-Thon.
