The Brainerd Dispatch special section Veterans Salute earned first place in the special section category of the 2018-19 Better Newspaper Contest.
The award recognized special sections produced by all Minnesota dailies entered in the contest, run by the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The section produced in November 2018 earned the distinction.
Describing the special section entered, a judge wrote: "The cover with a local service hero was great. Advertising and articles related completely to the section. Old local military pictures make this a keepsake that people will want to keep. Great job!"
The section is a collaboration between the Dispatch advertising and news departments.
